Default Faulty ABS ECU Advice please!

My ABS light came on a little while ago on my a3 1.8T (97) and today i took it to an Audi dealer to be checked on their computer. They told me that the ABS ECU is faulty and this would cost £968.55p to put right. The thing is, the light was off as soon as i drove it away. Does the computer reset anything when this happens? Im now a little sceptical about the problem being the ECU as surely the light wouldnt have turned off, would it? One more thing if it is the ECU, does anyone know the part number and cost of the unit?
Cheers guys

I wish I knew what code they got?? doesn't sound like the ABS ECU to me more like a dirty wheel sensor or low break fluid (ABS light off = system working and no problems) tell them to explain there theory??

With regards to this...

You usually hear a grinding noise when pullign away and your ABS light comes on sometimes...

Your ABS pump has failed, don't bother going to Audi, I went yesterday and they said about £600 just for a new pump. Shop around on websites, you can usually get a good deal if you remove your unit and send it in to people, but obvoiusly you need that little technical knowledge...

I did mine for about £120
