Default Faulty Dashboard Computer

Hi am new here and was wondering if any of you can help me, I've got an Audi A3 Tdi 1.9 - Y-reg (2001) and have been experiencing the following problem:

When you open the door, the display (time, date, odometer) usually come on. Recently, in the mornings when I open the door, the display either doesn't work at all or it flickers. A few times when it's gone off like that, the date, time and odometer (but not the overall mileage counter) reset themselves so the date is 01.07.1998 and the time 0.00. Also, if the display hasn't come on at all, when I start the car the rev counter, speed-o, temperature and petrol gauges won't work or they jump up and down while the display flickers. Once I get going, it usually settles down and works ok. Plus, I've noticed that it only ever does it in the morning. If I go to the car in the evening or during the day, it's fine.

Audi have checked it over but couldn't find any loose connections or anything. They've suggested that the only way to resolve the problem is to change the whole dashboard computer unit at a cost of £394 plus VAT! I don't particularly want to spend that much money, especially if I can't be sure it will make the problem go away.

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Default RE: Faulty Dashboard Computer

Hi,
I have the same problem in the same year and model of your car. I know that I have a friend in Brasil that have the same problem and the Audi said that is necessary to change the complete display. Tomorrow I leave the car on Audi represetant and if it necessary to change I'll do but I accept any sugestions.
By now, is anybody knows how to install a board computer on A3 1.9 TDI of 2001?
