Default Milage resetting back to 46,200 miles after switching off

UPDATE- Got the system checked on the Viag computer - No faults showing - reset was caused by voltage dropping - function limitation due to under voltage -error 00446. Has anyone seen this happen before? Will it happen again?

Yes, you need a replacement instrument cluster. Have seen this a few times, OR it'll count up from 6,500 miles (for example) to 6,506 then go back to 6,500, count up to 6,506, back to 6,500 over and over.

Thanks Aspen...How much is the cluster? Is there any way of checking what the miles should actually be?

Why change it? Um, legal reasons. It is considered a form of odometer tampering.
Sorry, don't know what the price is. You do have to have it done at an Audi dealer however. The data has to be retreived from the old cluster and transfered to the new one with the scan tool and you need an on-line connection to Audi using what's called a "Geko" I.D. to enable the new cluster and code it. Then, all your keys have to be adapted to the immobilizer (immobilizer module is part of cluster) which also requires the on-line secure connection. Takes about an hour or so to replace and do all the coding, adapting, enabling, etc.
There is no way to get the actual miles or enter an estimate for the odometer so you'll have whatever it reads now in the new one. Since the miles are counted by the cluster, all the other vehicle modules will have the same miles stored.

It is 554.28 for cars without multifunction display, and for with MF but with or w/o obc it's the same price at 398.97 dollars. Plus a core charge which you get back so long as yours is an acceptable Audi core, usually is. Plus shipping out to you, and from you back to me in order to get your core money back. Plus what your dealer charges for installation and programming. Retail on the cluster is 789.70 and 495.00 dollars. I realize the with MF is less money, checked my #'s to make sure.

Its not tampering if it broke on its own.

MF was short for multifunction. Not sure if there is an instrument shop that could repair and Audi unit. Could google and research that and see what you get. Search the forum here too.
