Oils ain't oils

Oils ain't oils
I have had my car since brand new for just under 12 months now. I had a service at 6 months with ~3800mi on the dial. During that service my records say they changed the oil. On the weekend since it was going to be a total of 12 months to my next schedule service I decided to change the oil. I have only done another 4000mi since that 6 month service. Any ways, when I was draining the oil sump and filter canister, the oild that came out was as black as black could be Now I was expecting a dark honey looking color, so whats going on. Is there something wrong with the engine to produce this black oil. Or is the fact that "maybe" Audi didn't change the oil at my 6 month service?
Any thoughts?

You'll find that the oil is darker in our cars compared to other similar engines because of the direct injection, but it shouldn't be squid ink black. That is normal for a diesel, but your oil should be very dark, but not chalky dark, if that makes sense? Keep changing the oil every 5k miles or 6 months and you'll be fine.
BTW, how can you have such low mileage on your car? Don't you like driving??? LOL
Cheers!

Hi quadric-
Changing oil and filters is cheap insurance. I wouldn't wait for scheduled dealership maintenance appointments to do that. Take it to the corner garage with your own oil and filter and they'll probably do the labor for $15.00 and recycle the used oil for you.

Okay, cause my friends car is a VW Bora GLI (1.8T Mk4 Jetta engine I believe) and his came out a dark honey color. I can't remember the exact color, but it was dark. So I guess it is okay
So my work is like a 5-7 min drive up the road, and most of my friends are close. Don't get me wrong I love driving the car, its just that I have some many other hobbies and interest I can't do them all every weekend [8D]
So on oil I was going to go with Mobil 1 5W-40 but ended up going with Amsoil 5W-40, mostly becuase the Amsoil actually said it conformed to the VW specs on the bottle unlike the Mobil. Did I make the right choice, considering it was like ~$2 more per quart.

I'm always a fan of Mobil 1, but I would use only the oil that conforms to the VAG spec. I just order the Pentosin stuff online and it works well. As long as your changing your oil frequently and using the spec, then all should be good.
