Default thermostat

hi newbie here...

bought an 1998 1.8T sport A3 the other week as a runabout in very good condition and mileage.......
question is as I haven't had an audi before.. was..

my car thermostat goes up to the 90 (in the middle of the dial) when driving around city etc... then I drove for half hour on dual carriageway first longish drive and it went right down to 60 !?! then rose back to 90 when going slow/city driving again ? any ideas ? new thermostat perhaps?

just that my other cars I have had (Hondas etc) have always stayed in the middle of the temp? but I have been told by a few people that its an 'audi thing' ?

My best guess is a faulty temp sensor. They are relatively cheap and easy to replace (compared to the thermostat!).
And that is not "and Audi thing" - something is broken.

Ya I had a strange acting temperature gauge and it ended up being the temp sensor - at around 75,000 miles. A3 2.0
