Default Windscreen Wipers Please Help

Hi,

Appologies for this post being boring. I have a 98 A3 1.8T. The windscreen wipers judder across the windscreen I have replaced the blades and this makes no difference. Does anyone have any suggestions what this could be? I don't want to buy a new motor if this is not the problem.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Jamie.

Check the bolts on the wipers they may be too tight which may be stressing the motors causing the "judder" that you are ref too.

You could try cleaning the windscreen thoroughly with some heavy duty tar removing cleaner, or an abrasive cream cleaner. Lots of these can be found in car shops like Halfords in the UK. This worked for me when I had a similar problem.

I also recommend to try rain shedding treatment on WS such as "Rain X" etc.
You can reduce the usage of your wipers so that you can feel less stress...

First check what kind of replacement blades you're using, some silicone ones can be too hard, and cheap ones (especially the "strip" sort) are just not worth it. If the blade carrier is "old" it stiffens up, so I'd recommend decent new "whole" blades, from the main dealer - the prices are competitive enough, and in the end you get what you pay for.

I had a similar problem, but that eventually ended in a siezed linkage mechanism (but not the motor, it tripped out before damaging this). The linkage was £37 inclusive from the main dealer, and fairly simple to fit, although fiddly around window trim and tight space. Lift the blades off the screen and check for lateral "play" in the wiper at where the post comes through the plastic tray. If you have play here, suspect the linkage, if it's rotational play, suspect the wiper is not fastened tightly on the tapered post. This can happen if you've had them off and on (or a windscreen fitted - like I had), and the taper has worn away - a cheap solution is pack the retaining nut with a soft washer to take up the slack, without over tightening the nut (copper is OK - but vaseline it up when you fit it to stop corrosion).
