00 1.8T gas type?
the dealer told me it was fine to put in 87 octane gas, but now I read something in the gas cap that recommends 91 octane, so 92 octane?</P>

** Someone sticky this thread please. I am not gonna type all this again...
Your dealer is a moron and should know better.
You need premium fuel - especially for a turbo engine where detonation will harm your engine over time. 91 you can get away with, but 87 is not good for your car at all.
The harder you push your car with 87 in the tank the more likely you will have detonation - which causes pits and burns in your combustion chamber, therefore lessening the ability to combust under sealed pressure.
Detonation is caused by uncontrolled heat build up in the combustion chamber that is sufficiently high to ignite the fuel charge on it's own separate and apart from the motors timed ignition spark. The resulting explosion can be heard as a knocking sound similar to pop corn popping. The force of the shock wave will blow away the 'gas boundary layer' that normally protects the engine surfaces and then scrubs away metal.
Your saving grace:
Modern engines often have Knock(detonation) sensors which detect detonation and retard the timing (hopefully) until the detonation ceases - retarded timing will keep your car from running as power-efficient as it should. Audi's have this - and so your car has never run at its full potential since you started using 87.
Also, another reason the 1.8t can deal with the heat loading when lesser motors would be warping their heads is its a cast iron block. Cast Iron is heavy, but for wear and heat distortion it can't be beat.
So - no you have not been destroying your engine. You have been not enjoying the great engine you have under the hood though - and you may have possibly done some minor damage to your engine surface, but you dont race and aren't chipped, so I think you will survive.
But PLEASE start putting in at least 91 octane. Your car will thank you. The engine will run, sound, and respond much smoother and quicker.<edited><editID>brrman</editID><editDate>38107.926412037</editDate></edited>

well, now its super all the time..
just got a call back from audi
the noise i heard at idle, almost like a diesel engine, they told me i needed a new water pump, one of the seals could have been making that noise.
here is the kicker.
they audi certified pre-owned warranty covers the water pump, but not the thermostat they had to put in, so now i gotta see how much that is going to cost.
