03 A4 burnt out tailight
I have a burnt out tailight on my 03 A4. I don't see any obvious way to get the lense off to change it, at least I assume the lense has to come off to get at the bulb. Does anybody have some info on this? Thanks.

Here's how it goes. Just on the other side of the weatherstrip inside the trunk are what appear to be "buttons" in the felt. A small flat head screwdriver will effectively remove them. When you look inside there is a (perhaps brass in color) philips-head screw that holds the taillight assembly on the car. The screw may seem to not want to come out but it will. Once you remove the screw, tug on the taillight side closest to the screw side. There are 2 "nipples" on the outer side that secure the taillight on the car. Once you free the screw side of the taillight from the car, pull the taillight toward you and not swing it away from the car too far because you may break the 2 "nipples" holding the outer side.
When you have the taillight in your hand and completely off the car there is 1 plug on the back. Unplug the plug. All the bulbs are on a "platter" which you have to remove from the taillight lens. There are a couple of tabs that will allow the platter to detatch from the lens.
Now here's the kicker. The manual tells you nothing about how to change bulbs nor does it give you bulb numbers. If they are the original bulbs, you'll find foreign numbers on the bulbs that you will not find at any auto parts store. You have 2 choices at this point.....1) Take the bulb to an auto parts store and buy the 3 or 4 bulbs that may match up or.. 2) Buy the bulb(s) from your local Audi dealer and put it in yourself AND hope the guy in the parts dept. can give you the "American" numbers in case it happens again.
Of course all this experience on the taillights happened to me 3 weeks ago so it's still fresh in the mind. Long story short...my parking light was out on my left taillight. I took out the bulb and found a foreign number, went shopping and didn't find it. The dealer insisted they change the bulb because my car has warranty. Regardless of the fact that my car has plenty of warranty, I wanted to know how to do it so that I do not need to go to the dealer for a petty thing like a bulb. They didn't give me the info I wanted so to alleviate any headaches, the dealer changed the bulb. Good luck Swifty...I hope this helps. [8D]
Hi Swifty,
I found this site. Haven't tried the instructions yet, but with pictures it gives me the best chance I've found so far.
