my 2001 has power driver and passenger seats.. o wait, i got a 2.8, the more "luxurious" version of the a4, haha jk jk jk.
'02 sport sits lower than all other B6 year's sport editions. '04.5 had painted lowers from factory. Fuel filter lines are different, and fluid capacities (brake and tranny) are different also from '02 to '04. '04 didn't have rear seat heat at all; I think you could get it in '02 but not sure. And last I know of, turbo inlet pipe has extra bung for some line that '02 didn't have.

I like my 02 3.0 6m and i love it, its my first standard, and it pulls really well, the car as all the options front and back heated seats, 6cd player leather all but the sport package i wanted it but i couldnt find a nice one. I would deff recommend if yo can find one to grab it.
Thanks on the props, Amze. That is an old pic, too, so hopefully it looks better now. It does to me. Sits lower and I've been messing with front somewhat to make it look a little different (splitter and different shaping and full blackout fog grilles). Not thrilled with the front lower in that pic and it looks nothing like that in real life.
The other huge difference on '02 1.8t models is the ECU. It carried over from '01 models and as such, some mods you can do to '03+ can't be done to '02 and vice versa. For instance, the AWE big turbo kit isn't available for '02 because of that. APr does have an '02 file though. And you can VAG COM fogs to be independent of lights on '02, but on '03+ you also have to splice wires in addition to VAG'ing.
Don't know why the '03 would be lumped in as poor quality, or why 2001 would be lumped in with B6's under poor qulaity. I think they are FOS. All the B6's had problems we all know about. Coilpacks, fuel pumps, ghosts in the sunroof, etc. '02 had oil sludge problems because they'd used a smaller oil filter, too. But '03 and '04 are pretty much the same. '04.5 saw some changes.
