1.8T vs 2.8L

No argument there, this forum has been very helpful to me since I discovered it several months ago. Just my bad luck that I seem to come across some posts that degenerate into SHOUTING matches, and the odd TROLL that SNAPS at you when you are just trying to help out ... overall though, the good outweighs the bad, and this forum is the best (Audi) forum I've come across to date ...

WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?! have you ever visited any other forum, ever? if you had you'd know that this is one of the least childish forums on the world wide web...and also one of the most informative.

... now, if only we could do something about the post-troll situation on this forum ... we need more helpful and friendly members willing to lend advice, and less childish put-downs and bashing in the post content ...

good deal then, it just seemed like you were bashin AF a little there...sorry if i got a little too defensive
I'm new to the forum today, and because of recent events, may be looking to buy an A4 soon... I had the same question as the above post, so to get the thread back on topic...
I have an SRT-4, so I'm familiar with the advantage of a turbo over a N/A engine, but I was still surprised to hear that you can pull 50 p out of the engine with just a chip... I assume it's by raising the boost, but couldn't you do that with just a boost controller for less than 500? or does the chip just get you a better fuel map? or does it get you a better fuel map and raise the boost?
Sorry for the rambling, just wanted to know more about the chip, and if there is one that is considered better than the others, etc... Also, as a side note, about how much hp can the stock block handle? If you swapped out the turbo, i mean. thanks in advance guys... seems to be a great forum thus far....

I really don't know much about cars...but have read a few postss on here...and have had 2 vw's before the audi. I was trying to intimate that one should not look at the reliability of the 1.8t as a hindrance... and I would certainly not choose between 2.8 and 1.8 based on reliability. When i bought my 2000 VW Glx the dealer kept ranting to me to get a 1.8t and I was having nothing to do with it... now, however, I do see the difference... it is more flickable driving the 1.8t...it has responded well to the modifications that I have done so far (regardless of what the hp figures are...it is a quick car now and I tend to pull on most vehicles that I encounter on the 507.)
if one reads these forums one gets the impression some people post just to bump their post-count. (my assumption was that people responded with one liners as more of a thumbs up and appreciation of postings being read) As a rule though, the posts here are informative...and people do not get upset about other people's level of knowledge. (people that do are typically uncomfortable with their own lot in life and express themselves as such). I'm an avid reader and try to 'inhale' as much knowledge as I can on here....but I'm still relatively new to the Audi and this board and really do not know many people on here.
so...if buying a 1.8t is a poor choice due to reliability..I guess I can't argue with logic... and if it's not heavier or the handling is not any less due to the weight of the engine.. my bad.
I would buy the 1.8t again over the V6....i really like the feel of the car a whole lot better.

I have a 99.5 2.8, and i love it. I really am not into modding too much, err at all, I just wanted a solid car and engine that was a blast to drive, that is what i got with the 2.8. If you are looking for something different go with the 1.8t, it is also very fun to drive, and endless modding possibilities, but as mentioned before make sure it is QUATTRO, it will change your life.......

Stock block can handle over 500awhp. The chip raises boost, advances timing, and remaps the fuel, for about a 50hp gain, and 80ft/pd.

but anyway... I read your reply to my post, where you told me that the stock block can handle over 500hp?!?!!! and I thought, "Get the f*#k out of here. No way in hell. Then I realized I hadn't been specific when I asked the question, and you were quite specific in your reply.
I meant to ask how much hp the engine could handle, as a whole. Not just the block but the internals, too... Rings, Pistons, rods, etc....
Basically I was wondering how much hp I can get with just swapping out the turbo for a larger one. (with obvious minor supporting mods - injectors, maybe fuel pump/fuel rail, etc...
get my audi on friday at the lastest, hopefully i get it tomorro. Thanks for you opinions guys. Getting a 98' A4 2.8L Quattro, im really excited cant wait to drive it. I decided on 2.8 because im not a rich bastard dont got tons of cash for moding, if i decided to later i will wait for a new b6.
