Default 1.8T vs. 3.0/ Longevity Question

Hi- I'm new to the group and this is my first post. I've owned a number of VW's- my latest a GTi with the 1.8T. I'm currently considering buying a beautiful A4 with the 3.0 liter v6. It has 167,000 miles on it and it's a 2002! It runs great and appears to be well maintained, but the miles have me concerned. How many miles do the V6's typically run before a rebuild is required? How about the 1.8T's? Which engine will provide the most trouble free miles? Thanks!

Since you have experience with the 1.8T engine then you already know its discrepencies. Both 4banger and V6 engines are pretty good, the V6 is more reliable because of less moving parts. As long as the service intervals are observed they'll run way over 250k. I'm pretty sure you can find something else with less miles and still get a deal. In short the V6 will give you the most trouble free miles. How long do you plan to keep the car?

I hope to own the used A4 for a few years-maybe longer depending on future income. 60K miles?

Thanks for your reply- JT
