Default 15w50?

I just brought my 2000 a4 a.8t to a new mechanic at school and he did an oil change while i had it in for pads, and he told me he dropped in 15w50, and said it was the best performing for a warm climate, where im at in clemson, the car was from georgia all its life before me... is this legit? its supposed to be 5w40 or 30 eh?

I say it is. 15w is really thick, you might notice some decreased acceleration and gas mileage.

If the car runs well and it is synthetic, it should be good.
Gas mileage may suffer as Trey25 said.

0w40 synthetic is factory fill for Audis. Did the guy put in synthetic or dino oil? Cause you gotta use synthetic for your 1.8t

so clearly 15w50 is not the way to go, as evident by my "whaaaaaaaat" as he told me he put it in. I think I'm going to go back and make him re do it, so the next question is, whats the best oil for me? 2000 B5 1.8t quattro, 73k miles. Im most worried about engine life and no acceleration loss. I've heard a lot of good things for mobile-1 5w40.... whats everyone think / use?

I personally use Mobil 1 0w40, but others here also use Castrol, Amsoil, & Pentosin. All good synthetic oils. For your situation, I would go with either 5w30 or 5w40.
