I use Mobil 1 0W-40 which is one of the recommended oils.

15w50 won't hurt anything - just run it in there until your next change and then use 5w40 or something.

Funny, I just posted about this. The 15W-50 is good for hot weather on the 6 cylinder engine and is actually what I use. Yes it is thick, but that is the weight that is recommended in the owner's manual for my engine with hot temperatures (I am up in Greenville SC, not far from you).

Go look at your owner's manual under oil. There is a graph there with different recommended wieghts vs temperature. Many guys run 0W-40 in your engine, but with the hot temperatures around here, a slightly different grade oil may be better for you. You want a full synthetic (Mobil 1 is good stuff or some of the other mentioned) that complies with the weight listed in your owner's manual.

I am not sure what I would do if I were you. I don't think the heavier oil will hurt you for the next 5k miles, but I don't know if I would leave it in either . . . though I am pretty finicky about the car. If the mechanic will change it to what you want for free or for cheap, go for the change, but if its $50 I might just leave it.

I'm also about to change climates drastically, going to back home to Maine for the summer, obviously not as hot as SC, does this make this oil even more un excuseable. I think I'm going to go ask him to change it for free, its just stressing me out.

Also, how do you like the audi dealership in greenville for maintanance?

If you are going to Maine, dump it and get a different weight.

Hmm, the dealership in Greenville. First you should be avioding the dealership for work unless you hate having money in your pocket. Go to private mechanics, they are so much cheaper.

I have had things doneat Steve White in Greenville when I needed them and didn't know of a good local mechanic. They raped me on rear axle seals, but I needed to get them done and had a private shop do them but they still leaked. I broke down and paid the dealership to redo them. They have failed to see a problem I have been having with rough shifts even though I dropped my car off there like 4 different times for them to drive it. I can feel it every time I drive the car. So they are ok, but I won't take my car there unless I absolutely have to.

There is also a shop in Easley called Import World. He seems very knowledgeable, but completely sucks. He says he worked for an Audi dealership for like 10 years and now owns this place, but I swear to you that I know more about Audis than he does. I had him do a few things for me that I didn't feel like doing myself. I have had to redo every single thing he did to my car. Stay away.

Here is a place to go. Honestly I haven't been there yet, but a chick from work found him and he seems decent. I told her a bunch of stuff and she sort of quizzed the guy and he got all the answers right. I will be going to see him about my tranny issues soon since I still haven't figured it out. He is supposedly a really small shop, but as long as he knows his stuff, I don't care if he works out of his garage at his house.
