2.6/2.8 comparison
Ive a 98 2.4tip, but really want a quattro. the 2.8's are all a lot dearer than the 2.6's, and they're a lot more for insurance (group 15 as opposed to group 17 uk system). The 2.6's are 12v right? Will I be missing out on much by not pushing the boat out a bit further and getting the 2.8?
Opinions on the matter would be appreciated.

Not sure how things work in the UK, we don't even have a 2.6 engine.
In the states:
96-97 were 12V engines with 174 HP
98+ were 30V engines with 190 HP
Care to tell us a little about the 2.4? Is it a tdi?

deisel? no way man. deisels are the 1.9 inline 4 and the 2.5 v6. Ive got a 98 2.4 v6 30v which does 165bhp standard. So you guys never had a 2.6 or a 2.4? Presumabley you just had the 2.8, which presumably got a new head when the a4 got a facelift?
interesting. i know that if i get the 2.6 its only 150/160 bhp, depending on your source, so it wont be as brisk as a 2.8 with 30 valves, but I was wondering if there are many differences between the 12vers and the 30vers other than engine. there does seem to be a few cosmetic differences in the cabin, eg steering wheel, but are there any important differences?
Well the 12V 2.8 (which I have) is 20 HP less than the 30V 2.8. The cosmetic differences have nothing to do with the engine. The 97 (12V) is the same as the 98 (30v), with the exception of the radio.
