Found a 2000 A4 1.8t with 127k miles on it for $6995, as far as looks its in immaculate condition. Carfax says its only had 1 owner, dealership bought it from a larger dealership that took it on trade in so they have no service records. Ive called a few local Audi dealers to have them run the VIN to see if they serviced it,coincedentally, the first one I called actually did have it at one time. However there was no record of the timing belt being changed. I know that if it hasn't yet at this amount of miles it should be ASAP. The only thing the dealership said was wrong was the ABS was malfunctioning a bit. So, would you buy this without knowing if the timing belt was done yet? Any way I can know if it was done?

If the price is right (nothing over book value) and it's running fine then sure. I'd take it home and change the timing belt immediately.

If it needs to be changed, tell the dealership you'll buy it if they change the belt.

Have them do it, or at least have them take the difference off the final cost. Although, even being sold at the dealer, that price is pretty fair even if the belt does need done. Take it for $6500 and do the timing belt/tensioner, etc. yourself for $300ish.

I'd be willing to bet that you could have the dealership change it for you contingent upon the sale of the car. Sounds like a great price non the less.

I've said this before, but mine has a sticker under the hood on the bottom of the hood up by the window and it says that the original TB was changed at 75k by the audi dealer. And I did it again at 143k. If you don't feel safe with it - just get the kit from ECStuning.com and do it yourself. The job is actually quite eazy, just very time consuming. check out audidiy.com for a full step by step how to.

Thanks for the replies. I went and test drove it, very quick in 1st and 2nd gear. The ABS thing doesn't seem like a big deal, they will fix it. But the check engine light was on, they ran a diagnostic and it came back as an emission leak, probably an O2 sensor? Also, they said they could replace the timing belt, and the water pump for $400, and build it into the loan. The only other things wrong were a few scratches and dings, nothing major. Overall, out the door with tax , the 3 year extended warranty and replacing the timing belt/pump I ended up at $8500.

Good?

Well, I added about $900 right off the bat because of the extended warranty, and getting the timing belt fixed. According to this forum, the timing belt should have cost me $1300 to get done, they are doing it for $400, only $100 more than I could do it myself. So after taxes, and a 3 year warranty and getting the belt AND water pump changed, I still think its a good deal. It blue books for $11,000 in excellent condition. Why don't you think its a good deal? I would have had to ATLEAST put $300 into the timing belt, which I wouldn't have wanted to mess around with myself. And now I have the peace of mind of a warranty.
