2001 A4 Tip Clutch at Idle, and TB change Question.
Hi all. I am new to this forum and I must say that it rocks!
I just purchased a 2001 Audi Quattro 1.8T with 77K miles. Paid $10300. This is my first Audi, and my first car with automatic transmission. It is going to take some getting used to. I like the Tip, but nothing beats having a clutch. I went with the automatic so that my girlfriend could drive the car too. I know.. big mistake. Anyway, it feels like the clutch is not totally disengaging while at a stop. I can hear the engine working slightly harder in D than in N. I know that there should be some difference, but what I find odd is that I need to hold the brake on in order to keep the car from moving forward. It's not like it will tear out if I let off, but it will start moving and get up to like 5-10mph without ever pressing the gas. It seems to idle at just above 750 rpm. Is this right?
Perhaps I just have to get used to the auto trans. Would a chip change this behavior perhaps?
Also, I just called an audi dealer to get a quote for Timing belt and Water Pump. First of all, he told me that the water pump is not driven by the timing belt so this would not be done at the same time. Secondly, when I asked what they recommended for TB change, and they say every 105K. Interestingly, the maintenance manual doesn't even say what should be done for the 1.8...just mentions the V6 5-valve.

But regardless, I will get it changed just because so many of you here on the forum say that it should be done. The cost for the deal would be $750, but I am confused about what he said regarding the water pump. Is the waterpump external on this car?
Thanks in advance,

Dude ,
With any auto tranny , the car will always move forward if you are in D and u take your foot off the brake.DUH.
Youre just not use to it. And no , a chip wouldnt change that. It is centrifical force if im not mistaken.

Thanks Dave666. Well, now I realize that it may seem like a real stupid question. Of course it will roll when you let of the break. Duh is right! Yet, I have driven automatics many times before, but I have never experienced one that felt so "grabby" as this car does. It takes more break to hold it than I am used to. But never mind that. Anybody know where the water pump is on this car? I am going to get a bentley manual, I just don't have it yet and want to know if that dealership is smoking crack or if they actually know what they are talking about.
