Default 2005 A4 1.8 Manual

Hello all:

I recently bought a 2005 A4 1.8 Manual. Since then I have been recognizing a couple of problems. I was wondering if you could give me some advice on these:

1) After driving 400 km between two cities, my "coolant low" light came on, and I immediately stoped the car to find out that I had no visible level of coolant in the tank. I took the car to the nearest Audi service; they topped it up and sent me away. There was no visible leaks under the car when I stayed for the night. Actually, there was no leaks before, so I assume that this only happened while dirving. Upon arriving to my city, the coolant level was significantly lower than last time, and I took it to the service. They did something and said it was ok now (they did not give any propoer explanation). I recognized that they filled the coolant above the max. limit (I have no idea why). Next couple of weeks, I had pinkish/white discharge coming out of a valve behind the engine oil cap. When I showed it to the service, they said it was ok to see this after coolant serivce I had (I can describe the location better if you don;t know what I am talking about). Now, the coolant level is back to normal (no more leaks as far as I can see), and the pinkish/white residua seems to be all over my engine. I reallly don't like the situation, especially the way the servie is handling it. Could you please let me know if there is anything I should be worrying about here? Is this normal?

2) I also have a VW GTI and, understandibly, the first gear response is many times better in GTI than A4. However, I was expecting a better response from A4 in the first gear. Until the turbo kicks in, I find it quite unresponsive. Perhaps I am not driving it right (maybe I need to rev it up more before I lift my foot from the clutch, but I have been driving manual cars for 20 years now, and I am suspecting that this might be a problem with my A4. Is this a common observation among A4 drivers or it is just me having these thoughts, especially driving A4 right after getting of from GTI seat.

3) I also expericne sometimes that 2nd gear ratio is too long. When I slow down at a corner (say in the thrid gear) and I want to speed up after turning in the second, I am getting quite an unresponsive pick. Again, I wait a while to rev it up and the the turbo kicks in and I go... Second gear is supposed to take care of this without this problem.Am I wrong?

4) The gear shift from the fisrt and the second is not smooth. I feel that I am hitting something in the mid-way, and I can feel a clicking sound under my hand. SOmetime it gets so annoying that I pass it to neutral from the first gear and then move the gear to second so that I don;t hit the block. Any ideas?

The coolant system might have had some air pockets in it.. I have had this happen to me before in my 2005 A4 1.8T Manual The pinkish spray is just coolant residue, which is caused by a very small leak. Did you get it on the drivers side of the engine where a metal screw fastens into a long hard black plastic pipe?

2) I also have a VW GTI and, understandibly, the first gear response is many times better in GTI than A4. However, I was expecting a better response from A4 in the first gear. Until the turbo kicks in, I find it quite unresponsive. Perhaps I am not driving it right (maybe I need to rev it up more before I lift my foot from the clutch, but I have been driving manual cars for 20 years now, and I am suspecting that this might be a problem with my A4. You have to remember that these cars are extremely underpowered when stock. I would highly suggest looking into getting your car flashed aka "chipped" its somewhat inexpensive, and isbig bang for the buck as far as getting more power for your money. Some people have noticed that the clutch feel is slightly different in the Audi's compared to most other cars, it will probably just take some time to get used to.

Never felt like my gears were off at all, ie too long, too short. Do you have the6 speed manual or the 5 speed manual transmission??

I feel that too, it seems to go away if the car is warmed up, and the revs are matching the gear. The gear shifter itself is unfortunately made out of plasitcs, you can pickup a quality shortshifter that replaces most of the plastic parts with metal parts in hopes to give it a better feel. You could also just pull the shift boot, and see if anything is stuck down in there (something might have slipped in front of the ashtray)

Yes, the the pinkish leak was from the exact location you mentioned. If there is no more level changes in the coolant, I should not be worried I guess; am I right?

Good point. Having said this, I can get what I want from the car if I play with the revs while driving - just need to change the way I drive slightly. Question: If I "chip" the car, will it create problems with the warranty? I have two years left. I assume they will not create any problems after the waaranty expires.

Ahh ok, well that screw is there to bleed the coolant system, it sounds like somebody just didnt tighten it all the way, at first, and thats why you lost coolant the second time, or something along those lines. I woulndt imagine that you had lost a lot of coolant, just a few drops misting out of that aread when under high pressure. Thats what is great about the G12 coolant, it leaves a pink trail of where its leaking so it makes coolant leaks a lot easier to track down I would just wipe that area up and see if any pink residue reappears, if it does go back and have theme either tighten it, or replace the washer that goes there.

Depends on what chip you get, a lot of the companies out there that offer software flashes have it setup so that you can turn the car back to stock mode, and take it to the dealer and they wont know. Usually the warranty wont be void unless they can relate that the problems/parts failed due to what you did to it..

yeah, same here, I just kinda got used to mine,

I asked someone who has another A4 (1998 model manual) to drive it. He said, if I did not tell him he would not recognize it. But after I told him, he was able to feel it as well. Yes, it goes away after the car warms up. Especially after along drive.
dont drive the car hard until its up to operating temp. (you will achieve this once the cars temp needle starts to rise) You can also just let the RPM's drop to idle almost and then slowly put it into 2nd gear. You will probably just have to get used to it... Im glad to know my car isnt the only one that does this lol

You are right, it felt like it was a lose washer, or something like that I did not want to touch ut until I showed it to the service. But I am glad to hear that it is not something I should be worried about.

You should be fine, but best advice is to clean it up and make sure the problem doesnt come back..
