Default 2006 B7 LOUDNESS/LAG/NOISE/etc.

Hey all,

I took delivery of a brand new A4 yesterday and have put 100 miles on it today. Still working on the pics! :-D

I've noticed that the car is LOUD at idle. When standing next to it, you can hear it making a diesel-like sound. My girlfriend's Jetta, while 15K cheaper and two years older, is much quieter! Is something wrong with my car? It has a total of around 109 miles.

Another thing I've noticed is the throttle. When applying the throttle pedal, there is a slight delay before the car goes. Also, sometimes I have to bury my foot in there to get it to go, and as a result, I end up pushing my foot in, pulling it out, thus making the car jumpy during normal acceleration. I know the throttle isn't linked to the engine, but is this normal?

And lastly, I'm hearing a metallic sound. You may be familiar with the sound of worn-out brakepads. You know, that dull-sounding creeeeeech? (not the loud screech). Well, while driving on the freeway and on the street and even when parked, a sound like that comes and goes. Braking, releasing, accelerating, moving the steering wheel and doing anything else does not make the sound go away: it only goes away when it pleases.

Even though every other aspect of this car has me in love, these three things are starting to annoy me. Maybe I'm using a microscope to look at the problems or maybe they really do exist, but I'm slightly disappointed at their existence.

What do you guys think?

Thanks!

Henry

Hmm
Well , I myself have a B6 , but have heard many B7's. They do sound loud, and especially when at idle.
I noticed it when I was beside it at a light today. I also heard Jest mention that hey are loud at idle.
I think it is due to the FSI.
Ask for the 'delay' you are feeling, this is called turbo lag. Although , I have heard that there is virtually no lag in the 2.0T.
Which trans do you have ? tip or mt ? If it is tip , that would explain the 'delay' you feel.
And yes , you are using a microscope to look at your car. Its new , and to be expected.

i went from a B6 to a B7 and didn't really notice much on the noise factor. The tone of the engine sounds different of course but i never really noticed anything at idle.

I'll check tomorrow and see if i can tell at all.

Sorry to hear your havin problems man. When you pay that much for a new car you should really not be dissapointed. I've heard a couple things like this about the '06's now. I've noticed the hesitation your talkin about when driving some A4's particularly b6's. There is a diff. between turbo lag and the car not responding right away when taking off from a stop (On tips). My car does not have this problem, but I think that's just how it is on some models. Good luck w/ everything.

Howdy all,

I don't think this is turbo lag, because I have experience with turbo cars, especially older ones which have a lot more lag. I do have the tiptronic, so maybe that's it? Why does the tiptonic cause such a lag?

Regarding engine noise, I did read another thread on another forum (or maybe it was this one?) that mentioned a loud engine on the B7s. Damn, why is FSI so loud?

Yep welcome to FSI engines. They tick like a diesel engine. You can REALLY hear it when you pull up to a drive through. I notice my 2.0T performance is effected severely in hot weather. How's the climate where you are? As for the screetching you better have the dealer take a look.

I don't know if your describing turbo-lag but my 2.0T Trip displays virtually NO lag whatsoever, and reaction time is minimal, especially when compared to the 'old' 1.8T engine.

I would have the metallic screaching looked at by your dealer because that certainly doesn't sound "normal".
