I heard that the 1.8 has a timing belt and the 2.8 has a timing chain. Can anyone confirm this?

 

my 2.8 has a belt its a '96. i dont know about the other years but i'm pretty sure they have belts as well.

 

The 1.8T has a timing belt.

The 2.8 has a timing belt and a cam chain. The timing belt is at the front of the enigne and the chain is at the back of the engine.

 

Actually both engines use both. The timing belt is used to time the crank to one cam in the 4cyl and to a cam on each bank on the 6cyl. A chain is used to time the intake cam to exhaust cam on the 4cyl. On the 6 there is a chain for each bank that connects the cam drivin by the belt to the other cam.
