well since i have a 3 yr 30,000 mile warranty, how should i approach this? i am new to driving a standard, but last summer while practicing with a neon i never had a problem with second gear, everything was smooth...however, in this car i always here a clunking when in 2nd unless i shift really slow and keep my foot on the clutch and go really slowly...all the other gears slip in like butter and i do not hear clunks, just nice shifting...also, if i take the revs high and push in the clutch to shift, the rpms spike a lil before i shift? my friend said the clutch is going when it does that? if so, how much is a clutch job?

take the car in to where you bought it and get these things replaced.

 

The audi 1.8 and 2.8 engines have a very heavy flywheel stock and tends to keep the rpm's hovering when you get it spinning fast around 3k then shift. To get rid of that when you replace the clutch get a lighter flywheel. As for the clunking the tranny mounts really do suck and make it really hard to shift into lower gears for some reason due to vibration of the transmission. A couple newbie techs took apart the tranny for complaints like these and found the syncronizers had no significant damage and got a pretty good slap on the wrist. (me being one of them back in the day) Get a good replacement clutch and a lighter flywheel if the rpm thing bothers you and up-grade the tranny mounts and it will shift like a racecar lol, well maybe not but it will perform much better.

Hmm. Maybe I'll have to think about getting my tranny mounts replaced. Is this a DIY or a "take it to the shop" job?

Hey guys, the car isnt doing it anymore...I dont hear the clunking...I think it was driver error ...im still a newb at manual, but i've been improving..anyways 2nd gear is still the hardest gear for me...besides that, everything seems good...
