Default 96 A4 Transmission Problems

Hello I am new to the whole Audi world I used to own Acuras, ok here is my problem I have a 96 Audi A4 2.8 that has never seen winter. Ok I live in Iowa and its been -7 the past few days. Now down to the problem I went to start the car this morning and it started fine and everything but when I went to leave for work the car reversed fine and everything but when I went to put the car in drive it wouldnt go... I shifted the car down to 2nd and the car and the transmission went in fine so I shifted to third everything was fine there so I put the car back into Drive as I was driving and it shifted fine then. So basically my problem is when I go from reverse and put the car into Drive it wont budge. Any help ASAP would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

ps My car has 84,000 miles on it.

Ill put it down to lack of use and the indent button is sticking in the gear shift or the button you press to move the gear shift is sticking try spraying some releasing oil in there ( and I know that's going to be difficult ) but try anyway

I am located in Storm Lake, I ran a scan on the car and it said the speed sensor went out. Any suggestions where to buy one from?

Hey 96a4 same problem happened to me, I have the 96 2.8qm as well. Did the same thing in the winter, would reverse fine, wouldnt engage in drive, but if shifted into any of the other gears and then started it would run fine like there was no problems, then just switched it into drive. Wasn't too sure if taht caused any damage, so I didn't drive it til the summer, when i took it to the tranny shop to get it checked. Unfortunately you are looking at a new transmisson. atleast that is what I ended up having to do. I went to Aamaco transmissions and got charged like 5500 for a factory rebuilt tranny and labor. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news man. IMO sell the car AS IS, and get a 1.8t, wish I had done that. The price of replacing the tranny isn't worth it. You mind as well take taht 5500 or so and put it into a new car. Plus if you haven't already done so your going to start running into problems like your bearings, stock springs, coolant temp sensor, and control arms going out, as well as the much dreaded TB change. PM me if you have any other questions. And Good Luck
