the 12v engine is the older (from early 90's 90's to 97 a4) v6 has 2 (12 all to gether) valves per cylinder( 172 hp) and the newer very late 97- something ( forget year) when they swiched to the new 3.0. the newer 2.8 v6 has 5 valves per cylnders=30 (190-220?hp)

I'm not sure when the newer engine entered the North American marked, but about '98. This engine has 5 valves per cylinder (30 valves total) it performs 193 HP.
I'm from Denmark in Europe, and the models are not always the same as in the US. The 2.8 30V engine was introduced on the danish marked in 1996.
