A4 18 20v specs
I'm a bit confused with your question...
Here's what I understand the early history of the A4 to be:
In 1996 the A4 was introduced with a 2.8 V6 12V with 172bhp.
In 1997 the 1.8T 20V engine was introduced (it had ~ 150bhp) and the V6 became a 20V with 190bhp.
So, I'm not sure what you have or what you want.

blast, this is a predominantly american/canadian forum...we never had the n/a 1.8, just the turbo. and the HP ratings are probably different for us too. we have different emissions stuff and i would imagine that ours are detuned more than yours...because we suck like that...like imola said, our 1.8T had 150hp
i know this isn't really relevant, but imola meant to say that the V6 changed from the 12V to the 30V (from 2 V/cyl to 5 v/cyl) and i think that was in 98.

The 1.8 is 125 HP and the 1.6 is 101 HP. Both version only available for Europe.
I don't know you can install a turbo in a 1.8 non-turbocharged engine but it might be expensive. If you ugrade to the 1.8T you can just add a chip and bump the HP from 150 to around 200 and in my opinion its worth it because you can play with the 1.8T alot.
