please dont compare Honda to the Audi[:@]
well speaking in terms of reliability, i have a 600 horsepower 03 cobra that never gives me any problems and is more reliable than any of my other cars. as far as the audis go, i haven't heard anything but headaches and horror stories. i also have a fully built 331 stroker 67 mustang. neither of these cars have EVER crapped out on me, and certainly not to the extent that i've heard of some of the a4s.
And which car has more miles? The good thing about american (especially muscle) cars is that there is less to go wrong and parts are usually beefier. Plus people with luxury cars are more prone to complain about the smallest problem.

is honda a reliable car one would ask and guess what ( its not )
haha..I think you know Honda/Toyota/Nissan are some of the very most reliable cars on the planet. Anyone that disputes that must be drunk... (agian)

mustang196718- If you would prefer to base your decision on horror stories go ahead. Unfortunately, im sure those stories are from people who dont follow maintnence schedules whothink the dealer is the only place that can fix their car...and when something goes wrong they get bitter about the outrageous $95/hour labor costs that get racked up not to mention the crazy marked up part costs. Audi's are not the most reliable cars in the world.. and I would place its reliability ahead of Ford, but bellow Honda. Have you everread about all the Ford horror storries?? Have you ever seen their list of recalls and TSB's??? Its HUGE compared to any other car makerwhich is one of the reasons Ford is going down the tubes financially.
Part of the satisfaction of owning an Audi is the looks a style. You must also weigh that against other car makers. There isnt much that competes with Audi in that area. Certainly not a Ford or Honda-haha...

from reading that, it seems your pretty much set in the fact you believe audi's arent reliable... everything to look for onepoint8tee told you and there are several a4 owners on here who have nothing but positive stories (me included.) as long as you treat the car the way it was designed to be treated, it is reliable.
no, i'm def not set in the fact that they're not reliable, but i def don't know enough about what people have had problems with, ie the timing belt tensioner and oil pump. if i know what to check and replace off the bat, then i'll know what problems i can avoid. don't get me wrong, i absolutely love the car, i just didn't want it to die on my 10k miles after i bought it, that's all.

Well I have 190,000 miles on my A4 and while it's a 2.8 not 1.8t, I don't have alot of issues with it. If you take care of your car your car will tkae care of you, but I agree with others, it seems like you have alrady made up your mind about the reliability of Audi

wait i misspoke.. 00+ have the updated timing belt tensioner so you dont even need to worry about changing the belt/tensioner until the scheduled time.. the oil pump will be fine as long as fully synthetic oil is being used to eliminate sludge build up, also the largerupdated oil filter for increased circulation. You really dont have a whole lot to worry about other than the routine stuff. My 00 has 85k miles on it and the only thing ive had to do that might not be considered routine maint. is replace the MAF sensor and ECTS.

that's actually exactly what i didn't want to do was to base my decision on horror stories, which is why i decided to write and ask you guys. i knew that you would def be more knowledgable on the cars, so that's what i needed to know. so pretty much just make sure the revised timing belt tensioner is there, only run fully synthetic oil, and possibly replace the tie rod ends and i should be good in theory then?

you treat them well and keep up with maintence and you will have no problems...

beat on them, and dont do recommended maint they will break

the stories you have heard are biased.. people that have problems with their car post all over the place bitching about things that have gone wrong

people that have no problems dont have anything to talk about

my opinion

its not the most reliable car, takes some up keep
its not the least reliable car

i've had my car for 8 months stock everything 130 thousand miles
i bought it well maintaned and i keep it that way

i've had a bad icm on my car.. easy fix, nothing major happened.. just a slight miss fire
and recently my power steering has been giving me problems (mouse chewed through a hose)

i change my oil every 4k with full synthetic oil
its a great car, i cant ask for anything more

no problem... before i got my audi, when reading user reviews, etc. i was scarred too. a lot of the reviews out there seem to be about people who got taken advantage of, or they took their car to a shop where bad troubleshooting was used to diagnose a problem. If you do get an Audi, I HIGHLY recomned that you pick up an OBDII scanner or especiallyVAG-COM www.ross-tech.com When/if something does go wrong that causes a CEL, it becomes a priceless tool to have with these cars. vag com is basically what the dealers use for diagnostics and you can do some other fun stuff with it too.
