i found mine on ebay. those deals work out if you can find a car in your area that you can go check out before bidding on 'em. of if you've the the stomach for dishing out $15-20Gs without looking at the car, more power to you!
half the time you just have to be lucky, and hit the pavement looking everywhere.
i moved down to florida in january and anyone who has been there knows that there are car dealerships EVERYWHERE. i literally spent 2 days going less than probably 5 sq. miles. anyway, i just happened to pull into a lexus dealership and jokingly i asked if they had an a4. the salesman said no and we got back into out car and started pulling out of the parking lot. before we could leave, the guy comes running back out saying that they did have one that just came in from a trade (99.5 1.8t qm w/ 93k miles) i test drove it an hour later and fell in love with it, the only thing wrong with it was that the radio needed to be rewired and the fuel sensor was bad. i had 7k in cash and laid it on the table. i told him this is what i can offer and thats it, basically made him a take-it-or-leave-it offer. he went to the back room for about 15 minutes and came back with the paperwork.
if you're going to stealerships, get a bank loan if you need to borrow money so that you can pay them in cash - you will have a lot more purchasing power and the interest rates on the loan won't be as high. this is probably gen. knowledge, but its just my .02

There is a 1999 2.8 Quattro Silver with 87k on it private owner I am checking out tonight.
Also a 1999 1.8T Quattro Black with 90k on it at a dealer right down the street as well.
Both are listed at 9,900, but they guy with the 2.8 is moving this weekend and needs to get rid of it. Should be able to get a good deal.
When did you pick up the 1.8T for 7k from a dealer? That's great. Maybe I should do that. The whole point of buying a car under 10G is so that I can pay with cash. Well a check anyway. Don't think I could walk around with 70 c-notes in my pocket.
The 1.8T would be more fun to play with, but my toy is already in the garage, I am just looking for a decent daily driver now so the 2.8 may be the better choice for me.
And why are there so many cars in Florida? Damn near half the cars on Ebay are in Florida.

I didn't see my car before I bought it on ebay. I was very relieved when I got it. It was immaculate and exactly as described. I also talked to the mechanic at the dealership where the car had always been serviced.

I got mine on ebay as well, its got high mileage for a 2000 but we drove 300 miles to pick it up so we did have the option not to go through with the sale if the car was obviously flawed.
Being that far away though, we didnt take it to a mechanic which I do regret a little because there was some minor stuff that needed to be done, but overall I paid 9k and have thrown in another 2 grand on various mechanical issues, rotors, brakes and services, but that is expected for a used car really (I think so anyway)...
