Default ABS speed sensor

I have a 1996 Audi A4. My brake and ABS lights are shining.

I took the car to the shop, and was told it needs a new ABS control mod. Instead of spending the small fortune on the new mod (and blindly trusting the mechanic), I sent mine in to Gavin at Module Masters to get it refurbed. Gavin ran some tests and said the module is talking just fine... so, my neighbor vagcomed the car and it said the left rear speed sensor is not communicating. I did a little research in this forum, and it seemed a simple job to clean the sensor... so I did. I heard on one of the threads that I should find a spring, I didn't. What I did find is that the sensor appears to have been touching the "reference ring" and has been ground down a little to expose some copper colored metal. Is the sensor supposed to be touching the reference ring? If it has been, is it shot?

After cleaning the sensor, I put it back in and the brake and ABS lights haven't gone out. I don't know if it is because the sensor is damaged. Do I need to clear the fault codes manually or would the Audi clear it automatically if the sensor were properly communicating again?

Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated!

if everything seems ok. light out everything cleen. do a simple test ... driving down a street when no one is arround just slam on your brakes if the pulsate they are fine if not there is still a prob. you also dont have to be going that fast

I have the same problem. Found an ABS sensor that wasn't seated all the way, pushed it back in and my light's still on. I did read however that the test for the light doesn't occur until you reach a certain speed (low).

Did you drive yours? Before I drop it from the jack stands I figured I'd ask.

I've driven it at high and low speeds, no luck.

When you say it wasn't seated all the way... do you mean the sensor needs to be pushed in as far as possible? Because I did not do this. I left maybe about 1/8th - 1/16th from pushing all the way.

I pushed mine all the way in and the light cleared as soon as I started rolling down my driveway. Turns out I must have pushed it out when I did the front end work. But mine was clearly showing part of the metal sensor, at least a 1/4" or so.
