Default Acceleration, shifting, power all messed up! HELP!

Ok, so here's the deal, i bought this dead beat of a car, a 1997 A4 2.8 FWD (not Quattro) 12v. And right from the start it was messed up, no power, super sluggish up hills. I don't know what i was thinking but the check engine light was on so i brought it to a mechanic and he discovered that the engine was outa' time, so he put it back in time. Ok so to the present, the car idles fine, about 800 rpms or so. But if you rev the engine, like floor it it shutters, rpms drop and then it goes up. When trying to start from a dead stop. same thing happens, i'll let off the clutch with the engine at about 2500 rpm and then it drops down to about 200 rpm with the pedal to the floor, it just doesn't have the power to move the car. After a few seconds it starts moving. The only time the car really moves is at high rpms/speeds. Starting up on a hill is even worse. I don't know what to do. How do you clean a throttle body? Please gimme some ideas, i'm already into the car for more than it's worth. I really want to avoid bringing it to the audi dealer. thanks!

I bought a 12v in hope that it could drive. This car doesn't do that! It barely moves, let me get it to drive then I'll worry about getting a new car...

I would have thought the same thing, it feels as if the engine still isn't firing right but that would set off the check engine light, which isn't on...

Ok, i got another wierd thing that i noticed, since i got the car back i haven't driven it much, because it sucks, but i've driving it 95.5 miles and that's emptied 1/2 a tank of gas. Why would the engine be burning soooo much gas, it's running very inefficently, does that suggest any specific ailments?

that tells me either o2 sensors or maf?

replace the oxygen sensor, there pretty cheap, if that doesnt work try the MAF sensor.

report back, im kinda intrested... it maby be a whole combination of thigns, try changing the oil, and the tranny oil, timing belt, those sorts of thigs may all be the problem

if the mech told you its out of time, i would replace the timing belt

You're running WAY rich if you're burning that much fuel. Clean your MAF, check your plugs and wires and replace the O2 sensors.
