Default AEB or ATW?

How do I know if my engine is designated AEB or ATW?

Open hood and look. It is engraved on the front part of the engine.

2000+ is ATW...

While we're on subject, how can I tell if I have a stick shift or tiptronic transmission?

are you saying that all years after 2000 are ATW?

because they aren't

2000 - ATW
2001 - AWM
2002 to 2005 - AMB

Well, considering he said he has a 2000, and was asking only about AEB and ATW, my answer was perfectly sufficient.

a lot of model years carry the old engine over into the next years early models. The 2000 1.8t's in the VW/Audi transverse cars are AWD/ATC engines and there are plenty of early 01's with them also

Checking the tab on the head is the best way to find out

The tab(cincyTT)? front part of the engine(PaintBallGuy)? It is a 5 speed manual (everyone else). I will investigate the engine bay and labels, what am I looking for there? ie numbers, placement.
