Air From Defroster and Footwell, Not Center
Sounds like the HVAC controls. Sometimes the buttons get stuck and wont shut off. I'd first try some spray electrical contact cleaner in the buttons and work them back and forth and see if that helps.
Next on the list would be to borrow a VAGCOM from someone. Use the vagcom locator link in the "helpful hints" section. Run diagnostics on the HVAC system.

Wow that sucks, sounds like most of you guys have the same issue and its all B5, good thing i have a b6 or id be getting worried, sorry to hear about the freezing feet thing, hope that gets worked out by decemberrrr
i'm going to re-visit this problem since it just screwed me over the other day.
my climate control has always been funky. in the past 6 months it has either blown air out of the defroster vents/footwell vents or out of the center vents. never both at the same time. never letting me choose. I can press any button I want on my climate control and it acknoleges it because the display changes accordingly. it really wasn't a problem because for most of the summer the air came out of the center vents ( a good place for the AC) and in late august it reverted back to the defroster/footwell combination. i figured this was a good thing heading into colder mornings to come. well it caught me off guard yesterday when it switched back to the center vents and it just so happened to be 31 degrees this morning in central new jersey (it was in the 70s last week).
I beg of anyone with prior knolege of this problem to let me know how you dealt with it. I commute to school every day and I really depend on my defroster to get me out of my driveway quickly in the mornings. (the heat still works but i have to wait for the entire car to warm up as opposed to blowing the hot air right on the windshield, this usually doesn't occur until at least 20 minutes into my drive.

k so i just went through the usual tab breaking bolt loosing routine and pulled some panels off. it's not the climate control unit (or at least the soldier points described in the control unit fix diy were okay)
i've located what i believe to be the footwell/defroster motor. it seems to be moving painfully, or not at all. so either bad connection, bad ground (where would i find a ground for this), burned out motor or something inside on the flap is preventing it from moving. none of the flap motors can be moved by hand (and if they can i don't want to force it and risking snapping it breaking it even more then it already is.)
has anyone ever replaced one of these motors? from what i can tell it looks like a serious pain in the butt, can't see any way of getting to it without removing duct box, duct box doesn't look like it will come out without metal frame being pulled. metal frame doesn't look like it can be pulled without removing entire dash board.
TECHS.... any ideas?
