Better get a good used alt or have a local shop rebuild it. Otherwise you'll be paying a TON.

I would not bother to upgrade. Our cars have a pretty decent alternator to begin with.

I have a rebuilt alternator that I put in my A4 4 months before it died. If you want it I'll sell it for $70 (shipped price)... PM me if interested I paid $175 for it from advance auto and it works just fine. You can do the install in 2 hours...

Actually, depending on where you are I can deliver it this weekend.

Default RE: altenator or regulator??

Ok here we go-

the other night i was driving and i had the headlights on,, heater on, fogs on, radio on, heated seats on,wipers on, rear defogger on (it was snowing)and voltmeter is running right at 11 or 11.5so i go inside thinking i hope it starts well it doesnt so i try to jump it no luck so i call my mom to bring the "jump it" car starter fires right up so needless to say it had killed the battery so i replaced it with a new battery that was just bought for the tractor so i could get to school the next day so no no problems since except when i put on all those electronics again it pulls way down to 12.5 but with them off it runs 13-14 well its 20 outside i i need heat but its daylight so no problemsas soon as i put the head lights on back down to 12 or so

obviously it aint the battery is it the altenator or the voltage regulator?? and how hard is it to get the altenator off a2.8 12V plz dont tell me this includes taking the front end off!

also i have noticed this voltage up and down issue b4 when driving at night but this was the first time it ever killed it and this was way back in the summer when i worked nights and used the headlights everyday on the way home thats y i was wondering about the regulator and not the altenator also were is the regulator located?

any opinions are helpful meanwhile no night driving heated seats or rear defogger use cause thats what seem to pull down the voltage

Thanks to anyone that can help!!!

no you don't have to take off the front end but you do need to take off the bumper and the headlights. then your have to take off a series of bolts and you'll be able to move the front end forward and you'll have just enough room to get to the bolts and get it out. it's a huge PITA but you didn't want to take off the front end lol. make sure you buy a proper battery instead of using the tractor one.
