Default Another "should I buy it" thread...

Alright, I have looked at 6 A41.8TQMs now and am yet to find the one for me. I was set in my ways of staying UNDER 100K miles, but I am starting to think this may not be the best plan of attack. I have about 8K to spend and I was all the timing issue dealt with. People seem to want a lot of cash for their Audi no matter the condition! Anyway, I found a 97 1.8TQM Sport at a local dealership. They sold the car brand new to the one owner and have done all the maintenance (including oil changes) since day one. The owner (who is 53) recently purchased a 2008 and traded it in. They took it in did the t-belt, tensioner pulley, water pump, brakes, tires and It runs perfect. It has 106K miles and they are asking 6500. I know that is high cuz it is a dealer, but i figure at least it has been extensively checked and they have a reputation to back it up (3 Month 3000 warranty on top of it). I worry about going private party because of bad past experience. What would you guys pay? I was thinking around 5700? Am I crazy? Insight please! I figure if I stay under my budget i have room for more fun mod wise.

sure, ask them if they will take 5700....... can't hurt.....what is the worst they could do, say no?

what they will probably tell you, is that they did all the services and blah blah blah........ but start at the 5700, they might stay firm on their #, but might also come back and counter, 6300, then you say no...... 5700......they will probably tell you, we are only a few hundred away we are not making anything on this car...... blah blah blah..... tell them you wanna go out side and look at the car one more time.... and then tell them 6

this way you have 2 grand for toys

For once it seems like a noob knows what they want and have a basic idea of how to buy a used car, good for you. It's good that the big stuff is done and 6500 is high but like you said it's at a dealer. If you could talk them down to 6k or under it would be a decent price. Just so you have a frame of reference I paid 8k for a 2000 1.8t but it didn't have the timing belt done. I'm not sure what condition the clutch is in but it's not unlikely that it could go in under 10k miles. Usually cars with 1 owner especially middle age don't get beat on.

the only thing is if you try to go for 6k or less they may take away the warrenty. the used car dealership i bought mine from said the price was firm (7500 for a '99 w/60k miles), but they said its $500 cheaper w/o the warrenty. the warrenty they offered wasbetter then yours though, it was 6 months or 5k miles.i would say deff. get the car if it checks out, saving $500 now may end up costing you in the long run anyways.
