ANYONE PLEASE......SUGGESTIONS......
hi,
im in the middle of diagnosing a fault with my 97 a4 1.8 20v non turbo. im trying to find the reason for the poor fuel consumption, i.e 10mpg.....
ive replaced the temp sensor, thermostat, o2 sensor, all these have made a very slight difference to my car...
will cleaning the throttle valve make any difference???
also there are no fault codes for the maf or throttle body etc showing on the vag com, is there any other way i can check to see if my maf is faulty, or if there is a prob elsewhere, any idea what may be affecting my fuel consumption, theres no fuel leaks as far as i can see... i also drive under 3000 rpms..
when i carried out a throttle body adaptation, the cars idle became very unstable for a short while, 10-15 mins, approx 6miles travelled in that time...
also when i disconnect the maf sensor connector and try to rev the car it almost backfires if i press the accellerator to hard/quick, it takes its time for the revs to go up, i.e. it loses its responsiveness when the maf is disconnected....
please help as im getting frustrated....i dont know what the problems are with the car....i cant even enjoy christmas with the car constantly on my mind......someone please help.....

I didnt know they made a 97 1.8 non turbo... Cleaning the throtle body wouldnt hurt... You have no CEL??? Dont let it ruin your holiday, its just a car man... The MAF accounts for air and fuel mixtures so if its disconnected its going to act weird I guess.. i really dont know what to tell you, this is like the 2nd post with same problems in the past two days..
thanks.
no, the CEL is not on....
ive tried searching the net over and over again, just to see what can affect the fuel consumtion in such a big way....
all i can find is slight suggestions of maf and o2 sensor or temperature sensor... no one says anything about the throttle body or anything else for that matter....

theres no fuel leak....
i just disconnected the MAF and took the car for a drive, it seems a lot quicker.. the drive of the car feels different, it seems as though with the MAF connected i have a major power loss....
does this mean the maf is faulty....
