APR Stage I ECU Upgrade

APR Stage I ECU Upgrade
I have a question about the Stage I ECU Upgrade. The website says you can get 215HP out of 93 octane on a 2003 A4 1.8T. The car has 170 or 180HP stock. While talking to a friend who knows a lot more than me about cars, he says there is NO way you can get 40-50 extra HP out of a chip. He also told me that chips greatly reduce the life of your engine. Can anyone shed some light on this issue? Especially anyone who has this car and/or has used this upgrade.

I've done it and it will give you what it says. My buddies also claimed that until I got it and they felt it for themselves. I think the large gains have to do with the engine being turbo. Dont hold me to it though.

The thing is , most "chips" people hear about are for N/A (Naturally Apsirated .. aka non-turbo) motors.. they give you like 5hp. while increasing the curve and throttle response.
The APR chip increases boost pressure from around 9 , to 14.7 (though you can spike up to 20 , and hold 16).
The gains will be as said, and you will also get the 60ft lbs of torque or so too...
turbo engines can gain alot more from a "chip" especially detuned luxury sedans

RE: APR Stage I ECU Upgrade
the apr stage 1 increases boost by about double. you car holds about 7psi stock spikes to 10 and the apr chip will spike to 18 and hold 14. they estimate that every psi is about a 6 hp gain if suficent fuel is add, and the chip changes timing and other things as well, its a night and day difference, and our 1.8's can handle alot more then that. check out the stickies at the top of the page for more info..
