Audi A4 1.8T (2001) Start up noise
I am from greece living in uk the last 8 years. brrman thank you for taking all this time to answer my question. I am useless with cars although i take good care of them. I dont know the different body parts and the fact that everything is hidden under the big cover which says 1.8t does not help :-). I tried to pinpoint where the sound comes from and i thing it is middle right ish. I have my car in for change Timing belt and a front discs. I will tell them to keep it couple more days and check it out. The workmanship is going to be more than the parts :-). My last service was £174 and £95 of it was workmanship :-). I am quiting IT management and i start enginneering :-)

Coming from the front? Perhaps you are hearing the Secondary Air Injection Pump. I have a 2000 too and it reacts when you first start the car. Basically its a heater that warms up the cat. It runs for about 60 seconds and then goes off (and may cut in for about 5 seconds the first time you slow down at a light). But that sounds more like a vacuum cleaner - not gargling. But it does keep the rpm at about 1100-1200 during the time it is on. You do not need to wait for it to stop before you start moving.
You may have 2 separate issues. The rpm increase is probably rel;ated to the Air Injection Pump and is not a problem. The gargling from the front? Next time you hear it try to pinpoint exactly where it is coming from. Engine bay, undercarriage, etc and let me know.
It may also be your coolant system. You may have some air in your system and that can cause a squishing/gargling noise. Not leaking coolant are you? Water pump might be struggling.
