if i could keep my car i would. the v6 in the e36 style bmw's has a top end that is to die for. And it sounds incredible as well. My car has 155000 miles on it tho and ive spent 2500+ in the past year and now it runs perfect but i have a horrible starter problem that nobody can seem to figure out.... The brand new starter that i just spent $500 on fires sometimes and doesnt other times.... and then the car has to be push started.... which is no good.

Bimmers are straight sixes. Not V6s.
I know I couldn't read all the other posts on here (maybe a product of having read basically the same thing 1,xxx,xxx times)
so here it is.
There is no turbo kit for the 2.8. The 30 valve 2.8 V6 from 98-2001 has several mods available, including a full supercharger kit that runs about 5Gs and puts you at about 280 or so crank horsepower.
The 1.8T is almost bulletproof as an engine. There is a cheap turbo upgrade that will put you at around your target HP and much more torque: The K04 + the aggressive PC16 file. Should be very reliable for you if you get a 97-99.5 A4. There are, at last estimate, one hundred billion A4s with K04 kits. Search the forums for all you need to know.
Things to look out for in the rest of the car: Timing belt should be changed at about 60K. Don't buy an A4 without knowing this was done. Oil sludge problems in some models in some cases is covered sometimes by Audi of America.
Control arms and tie rod ends are problem areas that you are usually SOL with.
Nice looking car, BTW. Good luck if you decide to go rings.

The 2.8 is bullet proof. The basic engine on the 1.8 is equally bullet proof, however, the turbocharger adds a level of complexity to the engine, so more things can go wrong (boost leaks).
Neither car will give you Honda or Toyota reliability.
