Audi Newb
Hi everyone. Looking to get into an Audi for the first time, know almost nothing about them. Hoping to get some advice before I start making trips to look at cars. Top of the list is a A4 Sedan around 2010, or possibly an A3. Most of the ones in my area about that model year are hovering around 100k miles give or take. What kind of scheduled maintenance do A4's require around the 100k mark? Cost? I like to wrench on my own cars so I can mitigate the cost somewhat. Is there anything in particular I should be looking out for during an inspection? I'm planning on doing a PPI at a dealership first no matter what I do, just would like to have some background before I get down the nitty gritty of test driving. Finally, are they reliable? Any consistent weak points? (tranny, turbo, etc) Thanks for the heads up!
Welp....just did some reading. Looks like the 2009-2011 A4's were nothing but problems. Almost every review I read complained about massive oil consumption (to the tune of a quart every 600-1000mi). The second biggest complaint, and the scariest of the issues, was the timing chain guide failure resulting in the chain jumping and very expensive damage to cylinder heads. Does this sound about right to you guys? If this is the case what are the reliable years under 9k dollars? I also read there was a recall on the 2009-2011 that fixed these issues. Is there a way to see if this work has been done by looking up the VIN?
