Default aftermarket head unit with bose system

I know that it has been touched on before...but who has actually installed an aftermarket head unit with a bose system? Crutchfield does not sell a wiring kit for this system...so would that mean splicing into factory wires? Are there other wiring harnesses available? I am not sure if I want an aftermarket head unit...but I might be interested if the job looks right

I did everything to my sounds system in my 2000 a4 1.8t Q and I had to rewire the entire car because according to tweeter and other car audio places... audis put out a weird ammount of ohms and each speaker has its own mini amp attached to it, thus if you put a headunit in and not new speakers ur old ones will blow.

In being a member here for almost a year, and a member of other car forums for even longer - i can understand the frustration of reading threads that are almost the same. However, unless I am just browsing all of the topics because i have some time to kill...i would not necessarily read a thread called "how the hell to install an amp" when I am interested in the installation of a head unit. I already have an aftermarket amp in my car for my subwoofers, and for that install - I did not have to re-wire the car or touch the headunit even once for that matter.

so even if i did scroll down a bit...which I did because i remember seeing the "how to install an amp" thread...i did not think that it would concern my topic

You will need an adapter to plug onto the factory connector from the dash/wiring harness. You will also need a high level to low level adapter to take speaker level audio down to an isolated low level output. The original Bose stereo has low level outputs on it that go to each amp located at each speaker. In some Bose stereo systems the amps will be supplied with 12 volts which is switched on by the remote power control lead from the Bose stereo. If all possible I wouldn't change or remove the Bose speaker/amp units because they are matched to your vehicle to give you the best sound possible. In the future you can always add another small amp to drive one or two woofers for added bass output! now the only thing left is to check these links out. good luck, be patient.

ok so basically this isnt really a great idea....i had a feeling it wouldnt be. I am really content with the sound quality of my bose and my subs, and i have my ipod hard wired into my concert unit now so its all great..

theres just something about the alpine units that make me want to buy one...but i see that its not really that practical for me.

thanks for all the input

Metra makes a harness for the Symphony and Bose integration. 70-1787 70-1787

For models amplified with Bose:
1996-03 Audi A4 / 1996-03 Audi A6
1997-03 Audi A8 / 2000-01 Audi S4
2002-03 Audi S6 / 2001-03 Audi S8
2000-03 Audi TT
Use the White and Gray RCA’s for the front
speaker output and use the Green and
Purple RCA’s for the rear speaker outputs.
Be sure to connect the Blue/White wire to
the aftermarket radio’s amp turn-on wire.
The White, White/Black, Gray, and Gray/Black
speaker wires will not be used.
For all models with power antennas:
Plug the Blue wire (supplied) in the position
above the Yellow wire. Be sure to connect
the Blue wire to the aftermarket radio’s
antenna turn-on wire.
