AVIC D3 Install in 2004 A4
All-
I'm collecting the pieces for this install - to take place in a few days - and have some questions.
1. Where can I find the CAR SPEED SIGNAL INPUT wire?
This installation benefits from splicing into this wire to assist in tracking when GPS signals are poor. I doubt this wire is in the current harness supplied with the factory stereo - so does anyone know where I can find it, what color it is, what it is near, etc?
2. Where can I find the power supply to the parking brake switch wire?
Again - this installation requires the ability to detect the on/off status of the parking brake. Does anyone have a picture, or information on where I'd find this wire, what color, etc?
Keep in mind - I have the info for the bypass mod, which would ENable all functions while moving - but I still need to connnect this wire...
3. Where can I find the reverse signal input wire?
This installation requires tapping into the reverse signal input wire to enable certain functions, such as backup camera. Is this a wire I can easily find in the dash, or do I need to look for it in the trunk. Any pictures as to where I might find this wire, and the color?
LASTLY
I've already received the dash kit from Crutchfield, it is a 2-pocket design for a single DIN installation. Ovbiousy I know what to do to convert this for my double-din installation, but do I, or will I need a cage to hold the unit in place? If I need a cage, and I've heard some use the AVIC D2 cage - where can I get one of these quickly?
Thanks for the info - I know there's a ton of interest in the AVIC D3, and I hope for a successful install and the ability to share pictures and such with the group...

Alright, I have a '01 so this may or may not be helpful. If you go to Audiworld.com, click on the resources tab on the top, click on tech articles, click on electronics and then you will get a forum page. Click on A4 and you will see a post saying Avic-D3 install by Driveslikeagranny. This is a good manual other than the fact it is for a b5. I would think that a lot of the stuff would actually be the same in terms of finding it. The wiring color may be different, not sure. Hope it helps.
the d3 didnt come with a cage? it should have that would work fine
and far as i know in order to get the d3 to play while driving, you need to re-pin the harness. atleast thats what i was told by an installer i work with who just installed his

KBIGGZ,
How'd the install go? I just installed the d3 into my 04 A4 using the stock wiring, speakers, amp etc. I modified the Metra double din cage that you probable got and modified the crappy little frame that came with the d3 to fit the dash kit. I'll post pics once i find my damn camera and I'm hoping to retrace my steps and create atutorial becausethere are alot of people wanting the D3 in their B6. Also i used the repin bypass trick for the brake signaland i didn't need to find the brake wire in the car, all I needed to do was ground two wires. Anyways, hope it went well. The D3 looks sick.

Here's a link to my Picasa.I took pictures after the install http://picasaweb.google.com/Joe.Dziedzic/Audion my 02 A4 3.0
(I know,I need to clean it)
As far as the pin, I dont remember exactly what we did.. I had a friend install it that works at a custom shop. Here is a link to a very good resource with everything to do with the AVIC line from Pioneer. I remember seeing a thread with the pin you need to change:
http://www.avic411.com/
I also made a custom background, but can not upload it due to being at work and being behind a firewall. I'll try to remember when I get home tonight.
