its the same thing, it read the temperature, then sends the temp to the gauge

Interesting mine has the same sympton, 1997 1.8T A4 quattro, bought a new thermostat to replace it. A mate put a digital temp sensor on it to check and said motor is running cool but not abnormally. My temp gauge always stays on cold, except in traffic it can go up, but comes right down with fans and movement.

there are the new revised 'Greentops'. they are what you guys need.. the old ones, ones that are originally in our cars are black and tend to go out.. this can cause a number of problems.. i can possibly get a couple people some for $13 shipped w/ O ring(they're on AZ)

I might be interested if you pretty sure that this is the cause of the problem.

not a problem as long as you get good heat flow into the cabin many gauges do that and not uncommon ( heat to the cabin is the main thing ) when it starts getting colder then there is an issue

Sounds like a bad thermostat, not a temperature sensor.
