Hi Guys (and girls),

I'm a new member this is my current ride an S40 running B12 and full polybush etc...

Unfortunately, it's suffered an unknown engine failure (possibly suspect mapping as it's stage 3) and the GF is keen on an Audi so I'm starting to look at Audis. for a share car and will be keeping the Volvo as a long term project when I can rip out the engine, throw it away and put a new one in.

the GF likes fast motors her last one was a 4.7 V8 jeep.

Being into fast cars myself - I'm thinking the following options.

3.2 V6 (supercharger?)
S4 4.2 (supercharger?)
2.0 Turbo / S3 (big turbo kit?)

Also ... is the turbo a better hander due to the lighter engine up front?

So the key question - which one is the best tuner? - Torque is a key factor, the T5 is very torquey (330 lb-ft at 2500rpm and blowing full boost from 2k rpm) so I don't want something that's sharp and spikey even if its quick.

What's the sensible limit for engine internals for each one?

Any advice on the 4wd system, DSG? (I favour manual) and tuning - as we'll have more than 1 car, having it off the road on occasion for maintenance isn't such a big deal so probably looking for something a little older.#

I'm aware that DSG and 4wd can get expensive when the power goes up - won't be using launch control every other day! (used to teasing mine off the line as it's FWD)

Soon as I get an RS engine for the Volvo, and get that installed, I'll be looking at about 400 brake horse power and 450lb-ft on a budget of 6 grand or so - so with the Audi if it's 4WD won't be looking to mess around would want at least 400 brake to make it being worthwhile getting a quicker one.

Any hints, tips and opinions appreciated to get me started.

Thanks - Ben

If you are looking for cost-effective power, the 2.0T will be your best bet. A chip, intercooler and exhaust nets you about 60hp/60tq all on the stock turbo. It is a favorite of many aftermarket manufacturers like us. When you move to a 3.2 or a 4.2 the cost of a supercharger alone will be more than a turbo kit for the 2.0T and supporting mods. You also get into fuel consumption and pushing a motor that was never designed with boost in mind and can run into problems associated with that fact.

With that said, supercharging a 4.2L will get you about 400hp. Full bolt-ons with a 2.0T and you are looking at about 350hp.

Great stuff.... will the 2.0T take 350 on stock internals?

Same goes for clutch? Had to put an RS clutch in mine as it slipped after 60k

also... are the internals and Compression ratio the same on the 2.0T and S3... or different ?

We have thrown 370hp at a Golf GTI with the 2.0T and it remained a reliable daily driver. At that point we would definitely recommend that you do a clutch upgrade though.

We don't get the S3 in the states, but from what I have read, the motor is different.
