its more like m3 vs s4 and m5 vs rs4
its more like m3 vs s4 and m5 vs rs4
Actually it is M3 vs RS4 and will be M5 vs RS6 that is the idea. European car jus did a comparo of the E93 M3 vs the B7 RS4 and the RS4 was declared the winner because the new M3 lost it's soul to Technology[:'(]
Personally the new BMW'S do not do it for me in style and all the techno **** they are giving them (idrive), but I would love an E30 M3 or an E36 M3 sedan, and I almost got a 318 before I found the 12v. I have a long love of German cars and personally BMW's are pretty close to Audi's in my book with Audi winning in the end.
I just came from a 2001 740i Sport and have to say they ARE the ultimate driving machine. With near 50/50 weight distribution, gobbs of power, amazing suspension calibration and astounding steering response it is hard to compete. I do however agree with most on here that the (E90) 3-series fails in comparison to the (B7) A4 in appearance and interior comfort/quality. That is the sole reason why I bought my A4 instead of the 3 this time around.
The B8 A4 due out next year here in the US should give the E90 a run for its money in the performance arena but the appearance sector stilll belongs to the A4 (in my opinion). Damnit Chris Bangle. Oh, another thing to keep in mind is that it is always hard to gain certain respect when you buy the "cheapest" car in a brand's model line. These cars are far from "cheap" but in relation to the high-end offerings of the same company, they fail in comparison.
The reason most BMW/Merc drivers look down upon Audi-heads is because the Audi brand, while it has been around for just as long, has had less than a stellar history. Mind you Mercedes history isn't great either, but even in their blunders they have made some tremendously popular cars. Oh, and prestiege can do a lot for a brand's perceived image. Take comfort in the fact that Audi is quickly reviving their name by building on their time honored tradition of luxurious, sport oriented all-weather cars.
My estimation is that in a few more years, if Audi doesn't horribly drop the ball, you wont see such a division between the German brand recognition as you do now.

I have to add that BMWs are not crap, nor are A4s. They are similarly based but very different. The A4 doesn't handle nearly as well as my 740 did... and I know... I tracked both, but the 740 was horrible in inclement weather. I respect both for their varying features.

from the land of bmw/audi/mb (1 in every 7 cars here), let me illuminate the bmw/mb mentality. @ the age of 30, i looked @ lexus, bmw, mb & audi. the bmw and audi dealers wouldn't even talk to me. it was unreal. this was when the mini and the c-class coupe first came out. cars designed to shift the age bracket of these companies lower. and no one would even talk to me. i managed 120 people over 4 counties, was the #2 guy in a $10mil year co, and no one talked to me. i asked for assitance and was ignored. lexus and audi, though, happy to earn my business. audi won out, much to my surprise. lets also not forget that here the bmw/mb owners will drive up facing you on your side of the road, and expect you to move. unreal. they'll just stare at you thru the windshield.
