Default Boost Question

I bought a 01' A4 1.8t this past summer and the guy I bought it from said it had a chip in it but didn't tell me which one. Anyway, I installed an APR boost gauge this weekend and I am getting some weird readings. Right after I installed the gauge I noticed that I couldn't get more then 5 or 6psi and was pissed knowing a chipped Audi should run 12 to 14psi. Later on in the week I took a long drive and started boosting approx. 14psi mostly in 4th and 5th gear. I then figured out if I let go of the gas in 5th gear and then press on it again the boost would go up to 14psi and hold; my car has never driven like this and the gauge helped me understand how to get this extra hp (power is sick!). The next day I took my car out and couldn't get it to go past 5/6psi in lower gears and still have to let go of gas and the repress it in higher gears to get the power (most of the time). Does anyone else have this same situation with their chipped A4? Are there any possible problems? Why does my turbo not hold a constant boost level? Thanks.

Not really sure what’s wrong, my car holds 19/19.5psi consistently through all gears. One time when it was 7 degrees out, it surged to 21psi but it hasn’t happened again since... Maybe it’s a bad/cheap chip? But, I would think if it was mechanical you would never hit 14psi… Its not hard to check the chip is pretty easily accessible, might want to take a look… It could be the stock DV too, but I don’t know much about that because mine was already replaced when I got mine…

Does anyone have the same boosting issue? How do I find out which chip my car is running? How much is a VAG?

I know this might sound like a PITA but take out your ECU and open it up - to see if it is really chipped - post a pic of the inside if you can't tell.

make sure your boost gauge is hooked up tight, might have a leak or something

and + 1 on cracking open the ecu to find out which one

I would second the DV. Replace it.
