I replaced my front factory pads with pbr ceramic pads about a month ago. Everything seemed ok then all of a sudden now when i apply the brakes(gently) it squeeks real loud and all the time not just at start up or when its warmed up. If i brake hard it doesn;t do it but its really anoying . I was just wondering what u guys think its going on. ('99 A4) (rotors are fine)

RE: brake pads
its poor just to change the pads without servicing all the moving parts ( copper grease ).

and did you bleed the system?

RE: brake pads
I have pbr ceramics. They do squeak occasionally when hot. Sounds like you have a uneven pad or rotor wear. I'd break everything down to have a look, or maybe even resurface the rotors. Is the noise coming from both front brakes?

RE: brake pads
yes the noise sounds like its coming from both front brakes but not only when they get hot, they do itafter a few hundred feet and i did bleed the brake line when i did the install.

RE: brake pads
I got zimmermann rotors and hawk hps pads. It was a DIY. Then the front clicked every time i would brake and rattled over bumps or potholes. I took it to an Audi tuner to look. They bled system and regreased. 20 minutes later sound was back. I took it to dealership. They spent 30 minutes with it and said the pads were too small and moved around when I applied the brakes or went over a bump and rattled. There was also nothing they could do.

I took it all apart myself. I noticed the 3 prongs that are on the back were positioned so that the one prevented the pad from sitting flush in teh caliper. I bent it back a bit. I also bent the knuckle of that prong a bit flatter so it wouldn't get pushed back out. The clicking stopped and hasn't come back.

Now, however, I get the squeal. I took it apart AGAIN. I put antisqeal on the back of the pad with the 3 prongs in a circular shape to match the piston area. That helped and squeal went away for a couple weeks. It came back again.

I think I figured out that when I bent the prongs they all aren't hitting the piston at the same time. This imbalance provides an axis for the pad to vibrate - and we know that squeal is simply a high frequency vibration. Tomorrow I take it apart for the millionth time and readjust the prongs plus do the antisqueal again.

What's my point? Take it apart and play around with it. Odds are the vibration is coming from the inner pad moving around at application. Antisqueal on the back and play with the prong positions.
