My fronts needed replacement at about 73,000 miles. I just replaced mine with genuine Audi pads and rotors. The little brake pad warning symbol should trigger long before you grind the brakes. At least it did on both my 2000 Jetta and 2006 Audi A4. It was a little over $ 400. Pricey probably, but at least the brakes behaved the same afterward. No drastic change like can be experienced by changing brands.

It all depends on what you are looking for. If you ask 10 people for opinions on brake setup, then you may get 15 answers. Anyways, for my spirited driving, but not racing in anyways, I like Hawk HPS pads. If you are looking for less dust, then go for a ceramic pad set. FYI, I would recommend that you get new rotors while at it. Blank rotors are not that expensive. No need for drilled or slotted rotors unless you like the look.

Brake motive on ebay has full set front & rear cross drilled and slotted rotors w/pads for under $200, the feedback sounds good. You might wanna check them out.
