Just replaced the CV joints on my 1997 A4 2.8 .. when i drove it out of the shop and down the street, I noticed when i was coming to a complete stop, the brakes started vibrating alittle and pushing back on my foot while it made an odd bumping noise. I checked my brake fluid level, it was fine. I thought maybe my ABS was acting up on me.. I've been told of ABS having to adjust to the tire's rotating speed at 4mph when braking, but I'm not sure if this is the issue. I'm not sure what this could be, anyone with more experience ever have this problem before? -Joe

 

i have the same problem, its happened maybe 5 times in the past 2 years. never knew what it was though.

 

Might be grease on one of the brake discs now that I think about it... probably got on there when the joints were installed. That or some air in the brakeline.. Probably the same in your case.

 

Usually a vibration in the brake pedal is caused by warped rotors. Rotors getfrom over tightening lugs or from inability to disapate heat from rotors being too thin or from pads being too thin. Joe you probably have over tightened lugs.

 

it did it with my old rotors and old brake pads, now i have cross drilled and new brake pads and it still happened about 2 times with my new set up. i know my left CV boot is torn but i think i feel the right wheel doing it only, its a weird vibration and its not from warped rotors, it only did it when im hauling *** and im braking suddenly as im going into a bumpy sharp corner.

 

If you tighten your lugs by hand you can't really over tighten them can you?

 

I can. 80 ftlbs with a four way or lug wrench is easy to achieve, with a 24 inch tourqe wrench I have tourqed wheels to 160 ftlbs. You also want all lugs to have an equal amount of torque, it only takes on lug withmore tourqethan the rest to warp a rotor.

 

Maybe if your super strong, i hand tighten mine but i dont tighten them to the point where its going to strip the thread, i just make them so its also not difficult to take off, i hate it when they use a heaby duty impact and get them super tight and then when you get a flat you have this little bar to loosen the lugz - that sucks, happened before.

 

That's why wheels fall off and why rotors warp. Most techs at dealerships and tire shops use tourqe sticks or tourqe wrenches to insure lug nuts/bolt don't get stripped or wheels don't fall off. It may actually be that you lugs are supposed to be that tight.

 

true. I have mine tight where they wont come off, my elbow is my torque wrench for now since i dont work at a mechanic shop anymore and dont have a torque wrench or mostly any of my tools, its what happens when you move out of your parents i guess well at least for me. No tools, no garage......my work space at dads garage about 45-1hour away. SUCKS>
