Break it down! Buying car question???
Greetings to all,
I am currently looking to buy a 1999 audi a4 2.8L quattro. It is the the 99 and not the 99.5 which makes me wonder about the whole online pricing thing, because there is no distinction or option given. Not only that, but I do not really have a clear understanding of the differences between the two models. I have done a search and still my question continues. I have noticed that the a/c controls are different as well as the headlights. Is the bodystyle also different? Any input on that would be helpful. The car has 54000 miles on it and is in excellent condition. One of the cleanest i have seen. Unfortunately, he is asking a firm $15000 which I feel may be a little too much, especially with a 60k tune up on the way and no warranty. My only other option is a 99 A6 quattro which is a color i am not crazy about, 46000 miles and a 1 year warranty. The exterior and interior has been beat up, scratches, broken panels, rip in the seat, and the woman who owns it is a bit of a bia*$@. She wants $14,500 for it. A warranty would be nice as i am not sure what services will be cost or consist of in the future. I am confused and look to the guiding light of those who know more than me, the good people of Audiforums! Any and as much information that you would like to share with me will be greatly appreciated. I always figure the more understood and known the more prepared i can be when buying this car.
Thank you all in advance!

Dont settle... if you give in now, you will regret it later, get what you want... if you have to wait a little to find it, do so... but dont go w/ the a6 if its not what you want, even if its just the color you dont like...
For the A6 is she firm on the price? Since it isnt something you really want or sure about try offering her $12,000 or something low like that. If anything she gets offended but who cares. May be for that price the car might be worth it to you. Without seeing the car its hard to tell if $14,500 is a good price it doesnt sound like it though. Sounds like she didnt take care of it and who knows what else might be wrong with it. Even with the 1yr warranty I would be hesitant.
As for the A4 I believe the style is the same, there is a post somewhere that shows the differences between the years. I cant seem to find it at the moment. I think but im not sure that there is a slight difference between the sport and non sport and 1.8 and 2.8 with the interior. Does this one have all the bells and whistles that you want? If so may be it is the one for you. I havent looked in a while but I think $15,000 might be about right for the 2.8. Is it standard or auto trans?
Other than that I would agree with shon if it doesnt feel right and the price isnt right for you, wait. If you are not in a hurry there will be others, keep looking. It took me almost 6 months for me to find the car I wanted, I was being very picky but I finally found it. If it were me, I probably would pass on both if it isnt exactly what you are looking for. However the 2.8 would be very tempting if it were a standard trans, for me anyway.

if the owner of the car did not maintain the outside of the car, most likely she did not give a damn about the mechanical maintenance. I wouln't even consider that car.
Thanks to everyone,
I appreciate hearing all the comments from everyone. I have had these thoughts floating around in my head and it is always helpful to hear others insight into a confusing situation. I think i would be happiest with the A4 and will look into it more.

I know it's been said before, but it's true, just wait. Especially with something like a car, you don't wanna get stuck with something for the next few years and be pissed off cuz your friend got a better one for cheaper all because you were too impatient to wait for a good deal.
Another thing you should consider, don't just look in your immediate area. Expand your radius cuz if you can find a better deal a few hundred miles away, i think driving it back or even having it delivered would be worth while (even if it's just for piece of mind).
