I was recently rear ended, and need to know if I need to replace my bumper. I was stopped at a light, where the car behind me was also stopped, then decided to gun it. The air bags didn't deploy, and I'm not sure how fast the car was going, but it gave us and the car quite a jolt. There is minimal cosmetic damage to the bumper, but I'm not sure what the technology is behind the bumper and if that's compromised. My mom's old 84 camero had a honeycomb structure and if hit at greater than 5 miles an hour, the regardelss of the condition of the plastic bumper the internal structure was compromised.

go to a body shop and have them look and get it replaced its gonna be free

 

I really wouldn't worry about airbags going off...in all cars built to todays US specs w airbags they are set to deploy in head on/tail on colliosions between 20 to 30 mph depending on the car...if there is minimal visible damage, than you can either live with it, or take it to a shop and have it fixed...

when I have been rear ended ( a couple of times in the past) I usually just take the car in to my body shop (the only one I trust) and I will have them fix it and then I pay out of my own pocket, my car is usually back to new by the time the other insurance company even calls, and then I just have the body shop fax them the bill and the insurance company sends me a check a month later...I have yet to have a problem with this "system"...this is a great oppourtunity to order an euro S4 bumper....and possibly get your lowers painted while they're wokrkin on it for a few $s more....
