Default Car driven with no oil: 2000 Audi A4 2.8 153000 miles

All oil in the pan drained out due to a big leak underneath. No warning light displayed on the console either because the sensor wires were damaged. So while driving on the freeway the car stopped and never started again. I took the old pan out and noticed metal shavings in it. It was obvious engine has been damaged but did not know how badly. So hoping the car may start, I replaced the pan and sensor. Filled with oil and attempted to start the car. The car cranks but not a hint of start. Ignition and fuel were checked out good. CEL was on in the dash and pulled 2 codes
P0130: O2 circuit bank 1 sensor 1
P0341: crank shaft sensor circuit bank 1
Are these codes relevant what happened?
I am thinking I should check the compression on all 6 cylinders and see what do I get. If head(s) or valves are damaged I should get pretty low reading or nothing. Should I do this or something before? Checking compression will be PITA bcs plugs are way deep down in the head. I am afraid I will drop something in it and never retrieve it back. Need to get your wisdom and thoughts before I start chasing rainbows. Thank you so much in advance for your time reading this long message and reply.

I wish we could work together on the engine rebuild but I live in San Diego. We can definitely exchange ideas how to pull the engine out and rebuilding process.

awesome well from what i gather is the total process can usually be done for just under a grand! so when you get started start a new thread title it Audi...Rebuild help or something like that and post pics and im sure all these gear heads are going to be itching to help! all in all it shouldnt take more than a month to do if your cylinders need to be re sized etc. if not maybe a week or too depending on how much time you have.

Is it a 1.8T or a 2.8? Used 2.8 engines are like 400 bucks. I would just buy a used one, change the timing belt/waterpump and some gaskets and drop it into your car. Drive it another 200k miles and not even worry about it.

It doesn't sound like it stopped because it was starved of oil.. You would have known well before it stopped that you were out of oil because the car would sound like it has a diesel engine with all the lifters hammering.. Also, the engine wouldn't be turning over..

Obviously if it was low on oil it wasn't a good thing, but if the engine turns over.. I'd ask you how much metal and what color it was. Was it a brass or aluminum?

The crank sensor is likely the reason it isn't starting.

How can I confirm crank sensor is bad? I don't like to spend any money on a dead engine unless I am sure the part is defective.

The engine is 2.8. I called few places ( salvage yards) and they tell me it will cost $1200 to $1800. Do you know any place where I can get it under $500?
Thanks,

Dude that car is only what 4gs? No way a motor would cost that much. Call bs on the price and go in with cash in hand. Ud be suprised how many people would take what you offer. What state r u in? Cause in texas you could get one for about 450 to 800 depending on the mileage.
