that's an Audi myth to grab your money like many other things like oil/ coolant but too much said already

Any updates on the situation??? One good thing you have going for you is that you have an 01 and the updated t-belt tensioner. One bad thing is that regardless of tensioner design, 116k miles is too long to go without a belt change.
People that have a pre 2000 model should do it between 60 and 70k miles because the old style tensioner is unreliable and is only good for about that long. Its not a scam, its called preventative maintnance.
