...chains?...

...chains?...
So I'll be the first to admit i'm not a snow person. Last time I even saw snow was over 12 years ago. I live in San Diego. I don't even see wet roads.
I'm going up to Tahoe over new years, and am curious about the chains requirement.
My car has quattro, and M+S rated tires. From what I've read up on, that's good up for R2 condition roads right? I've also read that it's 'required' for everyone to have chains in the car 'just in case'. Should I go out and buy some, and just return them when I don't use them?
Thoughts?

RE: ...chains?...
Just borrow a set from a buddy...doesn't even have to fit.. If CHP asks if you have chains, tell them yeah, if they want to see them, show them the box...Used to do it ALL the time when going up to Dodge Ridge. That was in my truck with new Mud Terrain 31's, but same concept
